SS 244 – Political System and International Relations (3.0)

Foundations of the political system in Islam, Allah's Sovereignty, Khilafah, Wilayat al-Faqih, dictatorship, obedience, equality, shura, Islamic State, Islamic Government, Bay'ah (pledge of allegiance), its definition and nature; peace and war. Treaties and Sulh (reconciliation), difference between Jihad and war, different types of war such as: military, economic and psychological.

 

SS 246 – Economic System (3.0)

This course provides an overview of the limitations and the failings of the modern capitalist economy and the solutions that an Islamic alternatives has to offer.

 

SS 248 – Self Purification and Ihsan (3.0)

This course focuses on developing an understanding of the purification of heart such that worship is done solely for Allah. The course will also discuss the correct and incorrect approaches to self purification.

 

SS 342 – Education Methodology (3.0)

 

This course discusses the shortcomings of popular approaches to Islamic education and discusses an overhaul of the approach taken to Islamic education.

 

SS 344 – Human Rights and International Law (2.0)

This course examines the issue of human rights on both the theoretical and practical levels from the Islamic and Western perspectives. It also assesses the performance of inter-governmental organizations and international conferences and examines the debate between North and South perspectives on human rights. Topics include: political and historical evolution of the concept, definition of human rights and international law, the role of international organizations and conferences, the human rights and international law- means or ends; critical case studies. Human rights and the Muslim world and the concept of Huququl 'Ibaad in Islam.

 

SS 345 – Canadian Society (2.0)

An overview of the Canadian society and its educational, judicial, political, economic and social institutions.

 

SS 346 – Islamic Financial Institutions (3.0)

This course focuses on how a modern commercial bank can be organized in an Islamic economy which offers the full range of traditional products and services, such as, deposit mobilization, lending, bank guarantees, funds transfer, and the like. Various problems and challenges facing Islamic banks that engage in these activities, as also their possible solutions are examined.

 

SS 347 – Media Studies (2.0)

This course is designed to give theoretical and practical exposure to how news stories are reported and how to cultivate positive media relations.

 

SS 348 – Science of Da’wah (2.0)

This course establishes the methodology of da’wah according the Qur’an and Sunnah, and addresses many practical points concerning da’wah in general, and particularly in relation to Western societies.

 

SS 349 – Challenges of Modernity (3.0)

This course discusses the challenges of modernity that Islam and Muslims face in the era of globalism from both within and without of the Ummah, specifically dealing with the various calls for theological and fiqhi reforms.

 

SS 442 – Intellectual Trends in Canada (3.0)

A study of the intellectual trends in Canada, in specific, and the West, in general and how they affect Muslims and attitudes towards Islam.

 

SS 443 – Canadian Politics (3.0)

An overview of the Canadian political system and the important issues that face Muslim and non-Muslim Canadians at the municipal, provincial and federal level.

 

SS 444 – Judicial System of Islam (2.0)

An overview of the judicial system of Islam as it operated in the Islamic state of the past millennia, application of the Islamic judicial system in the near past, and the considerations for its use in the future.

 

SS 445 – Leadership in Islam (2.0)

This course covers these topics: The concept of leadership in Islam; the significance, qualities and characteristics of leadership in Islam at a group and state level; the selection and election process; duties, responsibilities and rights of a leader; accountability of a leader; Muslim women role in leadership. This course also deals with how to deliver a Khutba and a speech, conduct a meeting, organize a seminar or a workshop, motivate volunteers, and run an Islamic organization.

 

SS 447 – Political Activism of Muslims in the West (3.0)

This course discusses the Islamic political theory to understand the role of Muslims in the modern Western politics of their home countries. The course will especially emphasize the role of Muslims in the Canadian politics.

 

SS 448 – Psychology (2.0)

By first reviewing the basic ideas underlying modern psychology this course will develop a basis for understanding how Islam approaches the same issues tackled by its western counterpart. A discussion of the inner nature of man the ruh, nafs, qalb, and the relation these have to man and society will all be discussed to some extent.

 

SS 449 – Western Philosophy and Islam (3.0)

A survey course of the central concepts related to basic philosophic inquiry. A general understanding of the main trends in philosophic thought will be developed through the exploration of key texts and personalities in history. The course will cover the period of the Greeks in addition to give the student an idea of the foundations of philosophical thought. This course will seek to develop first the trends that modern western philosophy has taken. Thereafter an in-depth look at philosophy in Islam will begin covering such personalities as al-Ghazali, Ibn Arabi, Al-Kindi. Ibn Rushd, Shah Waliullah, Iqbal, and others. Some time will also be devoted to the challenges Islam faces at the hands of modern, western philosophy.
