Islamic Belief and Aqeedah

The following courses will be offered under the focus area of Islamic Belief and Aqeedah:

 

IB 101 – Tawheed and Shirk (3.0)

A study of the Oneness of Allah, His names and His attributes. The course will also explore the meaning and various forms of Shirk and how Shirk has crept into many everyday practices of our contemporary society at both the private and public level.

 

IB 102 – Pillars of Faith (3.0)

An introduction to the belief in predestination, the angels, the divine books, the Messengers and the Last Day. The course will highlight some common misconceptions in these areas. Further, the course will highlight the significance of action to belief in the context of Surah Al-Asr.

 

IB 203 – Comparative Religion (2.0)

This course will focus on the introductory study of Judaism and Christianity from both the Qur’anic perspective and the modern day Canadian perspective. The study of these religions will be focused on similarities and differences in belief systems necessary for Da’wah and coexistence in the Canadian society.

 

IB 204 – Jihad in the Way of Allah (2.0)

A detailed study of the Islamic concept of Jihad in light of the Qur’an and the Sunnah and the modern day application of that concept in both the Islamic and the Western World. The course will help dismiss misconceptions about Jihad spread by both the enemies of Islam and the apologetics.

 

IB 304 – Allegiance, Enmity, and Rule of Allah (3.0)

An introduction to the concept of Al-Walaa wal-Baraa (Allegiance and Enmity) in Islam and its application in the modern day Western context. The course will also focus on the necessity of Rule of Allah prevailing over manmade laws.

 

IB 305 – Heresiology (3.0)

A study of the deviant sects in Islam and causes for their deviance from a historical perspective to further the understanding of the correct belief system. The course will introduce the schools of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah, al-Khawarij, the Shi'ah, al-Murji'ah, al-Jabriyyah, al-Qadariyyah and al-Mu'tazilah. Covers principal issues dividing the schools; position of the Ahl al-Sunnah at the final stages of the theological debate. This course also discusses the contemporary deviant sects, e.g. Qadiani, Ahmadi, Parwaizi, and Nation of Islam, etc.

 

IB 310 – Islamic Worldview (3.0)

The course seeks to present a comprehensive conception of the universe and man's relation to it from the Islamic viewpoint. Discusses the theistic and ethical worldview of Islam as opposed to the atheistic or secular perspective.

 

IB 410 – Islamic Ethics (3.0)

Definition, scope, and sources of ethics; relationship between religion and ethics; centrality of Akhlaq in Islam; moral virtues; moral obligations and duties based on the Qur'an and Sunnah showing their relevance to the daily lives of Muslims today. Role of ethics in the progress of human society. Surveys topics in contemporary moral issues, from philosophical and Islamic perspectives, such as: rights and duties, freedom and authority, justice, punishment, ethical issues related to work, profession, medicine and science.
